Toshio Hosokawa takes inspiration from the Japanese Noh tradition for this intimate and dream-like opera, relating the passion of two sisters, Matsukaze and Murasame, for a nobleman in exile. The soprano Barbara Hannigan incarnates an unforgettable Matsukaze, dancing like a madwoman beyond death, with superbly honed staging by Sasha Waltz.
Opera by Toshio Hosokawa (born in 1955). Libretto by Hannah Dübgen based on the noh play by Zeami. Created at La Monnaie / De Munt in Bruxelles the 3rd of may 2011.
