For the opening of its lyric season, the Lille Opera returns to the grand bel canto. After L’elisir d’amore in 2011, Donizetti is again given a place of honour, but this time with a very different dramatic work. Lucia di Lammermoor is considered a monument of the repertoire, and one of the most powerful operatic frescoes, whose beauty is equalled only by its violence.
Gaetano Donizetti was thirty-eight years old when his opera was premiered at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. Lucia was an immediate hit, a success that has never waned throughout its long career.
This opera in 3 acts is based on the novel by Walter Scott, The Bride of Lammermoor. It relates the tragedy of an ill-fated love between the descendants of two rival families: Lucia Ashton and Edgardo di Ravenswood. Enrico, the brother of Lucia, cannot bear to see her wed his hereditary enemy. He successfully plots to separate them by planting the seed of a misunderstanding that will drive Lucia to madness and Edgardo to suicide.
Stanislas Nordey, insatiable discoverer of contemporary texts, here takes a momentary leave from the theatre world to bring his unique flair to the lyric stage. After a brilliant production of The Metamorphosis by composer Michaël Levinas in 2011, the Opera invites back this talented stage director to give to Lucia di Lammermoor its full dramatic breadth. For this grand project, he is joined by conductor Roberto Rizzi Brignoli, a true connoisseur of the bel canto repertoire, whose mastery has been hailed in recent seasons for Rigoletto and Macbeth, and who will be conducting the Orchestre de Picardie for the first time.
Alexey Dolgov, indisposed, is replaced by par the russian tenor Georgy Vasiliev in the role Edgardo Ravenswood.
