Inspired by the harsh environment of the Aran Islands off the Atlantic coast of Ireland, the play offers an extremely intense reconstruction of the fishermen’s lives, their language, their relationship with the elements and the way they deal with tragedy. Riders to the Sea is preceded by Songs of Travel, a cycle of nine songs for baritone voice. This subtly constructed two-part work is offered to us like a rite of passage in the musical imagination of one of the last century’s most influential British composers.
