Two contrasting operas created in New York and in Paris respectively in 1947 are combined here on the same bill in the course of the same evening. In the
words of the composer of Le Medium, "the opera describes the tragedy of a woman caught between
two worlds, a real world that she doesn’t understand and a supernatural world she can’t
believe in". There is then a complete change of atmosphere with Les Mamelles de Tiresias, in which Poulenc sets an adaptation of Apollinaire’s burlesque words to his sensual music.
