A recital for children (but not exclusively) is proposed by the baritone Damien Pass, who will take on the role of Daedalus in the big family opera project in the Great Hall: The Monster in the Labyrinth. (The older members of the audience will find plenty of delights in this programme largely devoted to French melody, with Poulenc’s Bestiare and Robert Desnos’ L’Alligator, L’Araignée à moustaches and Poisson sans souci, set to music by Barraud, Wiener and Kosma. Recess will draw to an appropriate close with Erik Satie, whose light melodic fantasies remind us how much he, like the rest of this wave of composers between the two wars, remained sensitive to the poetry of childhood.
