Engaged at the Court of Louis XIV, Marin Marais would for nearly 40 years serve Europe’s most powerful king, playing and composing works for the viola da gamba that the latter would enjoy in private concerts in the intimacy of his personal rooms.
All the elegance and grandeur of the Golden Century of French classicism traverses this music, which can be as tender as it is profoundly touching, thanks to the individual timbre of each viola da gamba. Specialist in this repertoire, François Joubert-Caillet has recorded the complete works for viola da gamba by Marin Marais, more than 600 pieces by the French master, a monumental project from which with his ensemble he offers a tasteful anthology.
