Shelter: a refuge, literally a “bunker”. As the First World War raged, music protected or exposed those who composed it. Heroism in Debussy’s Berceuse or Ravel’s collection of Hebraic melodies; escape for those, such as the British composer Ivo Gurney, caught under fire in the fields of Flanders; political engagement, for Eisler, a close friend of Brecht, who would rally the communist party; artistic transfiguration on the keyboard of Goyescas by Granados… The variable geometry of the Revue Blanche ensemble creates a kaleidoscope of alternating timbres, colours and atmospheres throughout this programme testifying to humanity.
