One listen to his quartets with flute is enough to give the lie to the persistent rumour that Mozart harboured an aversion to this instrument. The flute traverses all the colours and moods, unbounded and light, then switching instantly, to babbling and verbose, and the strings are not left behind, either. The flute is equally moving and touching in the slow movements: those of quartet K 285 in particular, scarcely but a breath, manifesting a Mozartian vocal quality that, as always, strikes straight to the heart. A beautifully composed bouquet offered by the musicians of the Concert d’Astrée!
