‘‘The heart has its reasons of which reason knows nothing.”  Why such shock in Istanbul, in 2004, when a group of men launched into a folk dance in the middle of a performance? Christian Rizzo still can’t explain it, but the memory remains fresh and vibrant. Now he seeks to prolong the shock wave, open it up again a second time in this unusual encounter. This is what he has chosen to do with D’après une histoire vraie premiered at the Festival d’Avignon in 2013.

If he digs into the sediment of this memory to unearth almost “archaic” forces, the result is not only a prolongation, it is also the opportunity for a new dialogue: ‘‘I imagine today a dance that, all the while based on folk practices, rubs against the notions of decline, of touch and abandon, allowing each to hold on, thanks to the presence of the other, to this immediate contact.” For this occasion, the choreographer’s vision is carried by the compositions of drummers Didier Ambact and King Q4, in search of an earthy music of tribal inspiration, but that comes from no particular country. On stage, two sets of drums add the subtlety of their rhythmic play to the performance of eight dancers to create a zone of tension ‘‘between dialogue and battle”.
