Tragedy is individual, comedy is for the multitude. For his Creation 2014, the choreographer Daniel Linehan explores a paradox by playing on the comic to evoke the tragic. He thus poses the question, so pertinent today, of the place of the individual within the group: what do we win, what do we lose by participating in forms of common action? Attached to the choral dimension of the choreography, he explores with finesse and humour our connection with our identity, both singular and collective.
The work of this young American choreographer, discovered at the Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales of Seine-Saint-Denis in 2008, has developed considerably since his debut: in Gaze is a Gap is a Ghost presented at the Opera in June 2013, the dancers’ gestures evolve in relationship to a video reflection, transforming thus the space of the “me” into an assembly of individuals. This new creation, premiered at the Lille Opera in the context of the choreographer’s residency, is inspired from literary and philosophic works to place the tragic at the heart of collective and dramatic challenges.
