Returning from New York in 1982, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker created Fase, four movements to the music of Steve Reich, which she danced in a duet with Michele Anne De Mey. The piece launches an unquenchable quest for a new harmony between dance and music, the two passions of the Flemish choreographer. The synchronicity between body movements and musical pulsations, of a seductive subtlety, make visible the slightest nuance of their dialogue.
Her three next shows, Rosas danst Rosas (1983), Elena’s Aria (1984) and Bartók/Mikrokosmos (1987), stabilised the main strengths of her art.
‘‘These four pieces were a way for me to learn to write the dance,” Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker explains. “They share the same search for a formal language where the structure generates the emotion.” Evening after evening, her first four works take us back to those founding moments of one of contemporary dance’s greatest personalities – all the more fabulous to see the choreographer return as the interpreter of her work.
