To the question ‘‘why do you dance? ", Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui responds: ‘‘To honour my ancestors. To bring people together, thanks to the stage. To better understand daily life. To express that which cannot be spoken.”
His talent is to give a universal aspect to all these different reasons for dancing. Accessible and generous, the style of this Flemish choreographer of Moroccan origin carries the imprint of his own multicultural background and sublimates the eclecticism of his aesthetic passions. His artistic vocation is to evoke, line for line, the characteristic features of the masterpieces of Flemish primitive painting while imitating the dance steps of Michael Jackson.
In testimony to his new creation, Puz/zle, he unites dancers and musicians from distant horizons: the polyphonic Corsican group A Filetta provides a foundation for Lebanese singer Fadia El-Hage. From this highly original Mediterranean alliance, he sets in a new light the multiple facets (carnal, musical, intellectual or emotional) that compose the grand puzzle of human history.
