To plumb the obscure depths of our society, François Verret juxtaposes the visual acrobatics of photographer Ralph Eugene Meatyard and the literary obsessions of J.G. Ballard, author of Crash and Millenium people.
A major writer of science fiction – or, as he himself puts it, the “visionary present” – Ballard bases his work on the psychoses triggered by new technologies and dehumanised urban environments. For his part, Ralph Eugene Meatyard has promoted the principle of “freedom of vision” to liberate photography from the figurative and transcend the anguish of the reality that surrounds us.
Premiered at the Lille Opera for ‘‘Fantastic 2012’‘, this new show by François Verret explores that indeterminate urban area known as suburbia. Fragmented and kaleidoscopic, his technique forcefully recreates the interactions between the individual and the places in which we all live.
The director/ choreographer questions the way in which our psyche mutates within our contemporary environment. The poetic energy of his creations is always nourished by a strong political dimension. In this way, François Verret has invented a new genre: anticipation as spectacle.
