At the opera, Angela Denoke doesn’t just sing the roles of the hurt or anguished female or of the femme fatale. She abandons herself completely, offering body and soul to the heroines of Janácek, Wagner and Strauss. For this recital, the German soprano lends her golden voice and razor-sharp dramatic talents to the music of Kurt Weill, retracing the steps of the composer of the Threepenny Opera from Berlin to Broadway, from the shadows of expressionist cabaret to the bright lights of musical comedy.
The guiding thread of this programme is the character of Lotte Lenya, the wife, muse and above all the singer of inimitable irony, whom Angela Denoke brings to life with panache by alternating songs with readings from Weill’s letters. This game of mirrors is also an opportunity to rediscover the full richness of the composer’s American period. Excerpts from Lady in the dark or A Touch of Venus prove that Weill, even if deprived of the corrosive pen of Bertolt Brecht, did not lose a jot of inspiration after traversing the Atlantic.
